University of Ljubljana is an institution with a very rich tradition. It was established in 1919 on the foundations of a long-established pedagogical tradition. It is a very large university, with more than 60.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in over 158 different undergraduate and 117 postgraduate study programs. It employs approximately 5.700 higher education teachers, researchers, assistants and administrative staff in 22 faculties, 2 academies and 1 university college. The central building, all three academies and a host of faculties are located in the centre. Some of the most recent and modern buildings were constructed in the outskirts of Ljubljana, giving the university and its students a ubiquitous presence in the city.
The University of Ljubljana in renowned for its quality social and natural sciences and technical study programmes. Its projects keep pace with the latest developments in the areas of arts, sciences and technology at home and abroad. The 2005/2006 academic year marked the first offer of 17 undergraduate and 13 masters's degree courses designed in accordance with the Bologna Declaration.
Ljubljana offers a great variety of entertainment. Various classical concerts are held in Cankarjev dom, the Philharmonic and churches. Besides classical music there are many pop rock concerts in halls, clubs, pubs and discotheques. The city has 12 cinemas, well stocked with most current movies. Foreign films are shown with Slovene subtitles. Throughout Ljubljana there are about 15 museums and 25 galleries and collections, and seven major theatres.
